Sparkle Work Diary

In this shoot I remembered I had glitter still in the studio from when I did my 'Comme Une Etoile' shoot, so I decided it would make a nice shoot to take pictures of glitter in a close up form. With the use of the boom the light reflected off the glitter, showing how shiny it was. I think this made a really nice effect. this shoot was difficult to complete because I wanted to be very close close ups of the glitter, therefore I had the camera in close proximity of the glitter and i had the camera on full zoom, this could make the whole image become out of focus or parts of it. The fact that some parts of the image were out of focus in some of the shots was a nice effect because it would show one lot of glitter very sharp and the rest of it would be out of focus therefore it would make a mixture of colours and would suggest there was a lot more then there actually was. With this shoot I think it would helped if I had more glitter and a bigger space to spread it on because the majority of my difficulty was that I didn't want to get the background of the studio (the actual room) in the image because it would become hard to crop as the glitter would also be at the top of the image as would be the studio. If I got to do this shoot again I would get more colours of glitter so there was a combustion of colours, I would also consider making images with the glitter, for example, a rainbow.

In this image I mixed all the glitter colours together so they were all together and not so segregated. I think this image relates to my project brief of beauty because of the way it sparkles when the light hits against it. In this image I made the glitter take up the entirety of the image, this involved me having to crop it as the background of the studio got in, however by cropping the image became completely glitter, which I think looks better than if there was a backdrop in it. I like the use of colour  in this image as I think it is more aesthetically pleasing to look at and more interesting than if there was just one solid colour.

In this image I had the backdrop partially showing because I was showing the bottles of glitter pouring out, therefore showing it as a mess opposed to it just being clutter. I did not put the entire bottles in as I didn't want them to be the focal point of the image. This image reminds me of how make up spills around and how it can be spread out when a person gets ready, I think it would make a nice image to do a picture of make up very much like this image and to place them next to each other to create a juxtaposition. This image fits my project brief because the glitter still remains to be beautiful despite the fact that it is just a mess, the use of the colour and how they seem to be leaking down due to the bottles , it is just very pretty to look at.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots which I could complete in the future, and due to the shine of glitter, I definitely think I want to work with glitter again. In the future, possible shoots which I could do with glitter, could be things covered in glitter, for example food. I can envision an image of an apple with a bit in it, and excluding the bite, everything else on the apple is covered in glitter. This photo has also made me consider juxtaposition photography for the future, for example an image with a girl with lots of make up on and an image next to it with a girl with no make up on and glasses. I think an image like this would make people consider what beauty actually is. From my last shoot of Cultural Beauty I progressed onto this shoot through the idea of cultural themes, for example, I mentioned within my Cultural Beauty work diary that I wanted to explore indian beauty themes, within this shoot I have used colours of glitter which are associated with indian themes, this shoot also reminds me of the event 'Holi Holiday' in which people of the indian race throw bright coloured powder paint in celebration, the colours of this glitter reminds me of this indian event.

Differences Work Diary

In this shoot I decided to shoot a variety of different people displaying a variety of different beauties, I completed this shoot in the studio. I only used girls within this shoot as it is mainly girls who struggle with insecurities, so I did this shoot as a message to show beauty doesn't just come in one form. If I was to do this shoot again I think I would gather more girls for my shoot and do a 4x3 multiple imagery piece and I would have the girls beauty ranging more from different styles, e.g. gothic, nerdy, natural etc. I think this shoot went okay, apart from the multiple imagery piece I didn't really think about the other shots which were possible for the shoot, I think I should of done more planning for this shoot considering single shots which I could edit. This shoot was very quick for me to complete as I didn't need to prepare my models and I didn't need to arrange them as such, I let them pose how they was comfortable, as i think when a model is comfortable it is visible within a picture as opposed to them being forced. This shoot fits my project brief of beauty because it is displaying different types of beauty within different people and that some beauties are natural and most beauties feel the need to adjust themselves with the use of make up, however each within themselves, each is just as beautiful as the other.

In this image I made a multiple imagery piece of all of the different models I used, each model has their own pose, even if it is just a smile, they each have their own smile that does not look like the others. I think this piece worked very well as each model looks different. In this image I did not edit the singular pictures within the multiple imagery piece as I wanted it to appear natural. In this image my models range from having no make up to wearing a full face of make up, however each model looks comfortable and this is the kind of message that I wanted to send, to be comfortable in your own skin. I used a black backdrop which turned out to be completely black in the image, which worked very well against the complexion of each model.

In this image I took a picture of one of my models covering her face, I think this came out quite nicely with the use of the saturation tool, making her a lot more subtle against the black backdrop. I think this picture by itself has its own little message about the girls of todays society, how they are very insecure and feel the need to hide. Within this image i told the model she could pose however she wanted and she hid behind her hands, this showing that she is camera shy and not very comfortable in front of a lens. I think this shot was very good for the title of the shoot of differences as along with the other pictures it shows how some girls are confident and how some girls are very shy and perhaps insecure. I like in this image how her hands cover the entirety of her face as it sends the message more forcefully as opposed to if she was peaking through her fingers.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of future shoots which I could pursue, for example, I could do a shoot showing various different styles which I have mentioned in the first paragraph. I could also do a shoot involving boys as well showing that they too have insecurities and each look different and simply select boys who don't look similar. Prior to this shoot I completed a 'candid' shoot which showed beauty in its most natural element as the images were shot without my models knowing when I would take a picture, and due to them being boys, they were not wearing make up. I progressed from my 'Candid' shoot onto my 'Differences' shoot, through the theme of being natural as I thought this was a nice idea to have running through my beauty project.

Cultural Beauty Work Diary

In this shoot I used the studio to do a shoot of myself wearing a headscarf, the aim of this shoot was so show a different kind of beauty. I achieved this by making my eyelashes really look and putting on extra eyeliner as they are all that would be seen, and they would hang over the headscarf. I got the influence to do this from a picture I found on a social networking site of a girl in a white headscarf with long black fake eyelashes, the picture was very eye-catching. I think this shoot went very well, i didn't take many pictures because I was doing close ups and they would all end up looking the same, however the shots that I did get came out very good. I did this shoot using a selfie pole and despite the fact that i couldn't control the camera very well, the images came out very clear and definitely in focus. If I was to do this shoot again I would do it with a different headscarf as the headscarf I used had zebras all over it which slightly took the attention off my eyes, also a zebra scarf is not what they would use in a country that wears them, the headscarfs would be plain (of any colour) or only with a slight pattern on them. I did a shoot with a headscarf last year which came out really well, however I prefer this one solely because of the focus on my eyes.

In this image when enlarged you can see my eyelashes hanging over the headscarf which is a really nice effect, also because I have taken colour out of this image (using the saturation tool) which makes the blue of the scarf more subtle and the black of the eyelashes a lot more prominent. I like the framing of this image as I like how my eyes are almost central making them the focal point of the image. Apart from my jumper (which is barely seen) my eyes are the darkest part of this image, producing the most eye-catching colour against the subtle tones, which automatically makes them the focal point of the image. I used a black backdrop within this image and due to the use of saturation it became a lighter tone which worked well against the blue of the scarf.

In this picture I created a multiple imagery piece of me wearing a full head burka, therefore the main focus of this entire multiple imagery piece is my eyes as they are all that can be seen. I kept the colour within this image which I think worked quite well as my eyes were still very prominent within the picture because they were hard hitting against my complexion and the light blue of the scarf. All I changed within this image was the levels which brought each image to the right lighting. I think if I was to do this shoot again i would face differently in some shots because as you can see within this image I am solely facing towards the left, which can make the image look the same as I can't really pull any different expression. I also like the use of the black back drop within this image as it brings out the blue of the burka making it very noticeable.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of other possible shoots which I could pursue in the future, for example, I could do a shoot showing what beauty is in more cultures, for example, a geisha, or in an indian setting (including a bindi and traditional indian wear). Prior to this shoot I completed a 'differences' shoot which showed range of different peoples version of beauty, in the differences work diary I commented that I wanted to explore various different styles, I progressed onto this shoot by showing a different version of beauty by visiting another culture of beauty. Within other cultures, the burka is worn however beauty can still be incorporated, therefore I continued to show 'differences' of beauty.

Candid Work Diary

In this shoot I went into Harlow town and took pictures of my two friends just walking around normally as I felt the need to do a natural shoot involving a person in a natural element, like a candid shot. I tried to achieve a very natural feel to these photos which I think I achieved because it is simply of them walking around, or their hands just fiddling with objects like their phones. If I was to do this shoot again I would probably use more people however I think the shoot worked well with just two. What I have learnt with this shoot is that it is very difficult to take pictures whilst walking because I was trying to keep up with my models whilst they were walking, I didn't want to ask them to stop because I feel it would have taken away that natural element. I don't think I would do this shoot again because I feel I have got all out of it that I can. From my last shoot, I haven't improved on location because it is the exact same however in this shoot the location doesn't matter because it is not meant to be staged, it is meant to feel very natural, almost every day like.

This image was taken without the models actually knowing which achieves the natural vibe that I wanted. In this image I used selective colour and I prefer this use of selective colour than the one in my previous shoot 'Exterior' because in this one the selective colour seems a lot more subtle and in this use of selective colour, a meaning is actually held behind it. The use of selective colour in this image shows them as the most important part of the picture and allows them to stand out against everything and everyone else. If I was to do this picture again I think I would do it so that you can see their whole bodies walking as it would of provided a lot more background and more of them to show they are the most important thing within the picture.

With this image I think I successfully made this shoot achieve the project title of beauty, I think this because of how natural this picture is, yet how beautiful it still looks. The models face is smooth yet you can still see all the curves and grooves of his face and of his hands. You can see that he is waiting within this picture and it is just as simple as that and I think the simplicity of this picture makes it very beautiful. I took some saturation out of this picture to make it a lot smoother and less bright, which makes me personally see it as quite a calming picture. What I learnt from taking this picture is not everything beautiful has to be staged and made up, for example, with make up. In a lot of my still shoots I mainly use females however this shoot has taught me to try and use males more as they photograph quite well and their naturalness comes across quite beautiful in its own simple way.

This shoot lead me to think what I could do in other shoots in the future and I think I could do another shoot of candids however in London so the candids are of more than just 2 people. By doing this it would show more of a range of people and a spread of different beauties.

L.O.V.E Work Diary

In this shoot I decided to do a video. It is very much like my display of the technique however this time, since expanding my project to beauty I decided to make the video longer. This video is linked to my project brief because many say that love is beautiful therefore it fits into my brief. I really enjoyed making this video and I probably wouldn't of it again as I have done the same kind of thing twice, although to improve it I think I could of branched out into different places, this time I simply went to town which is only a 5 minute walk away, I think I should have gone to different locations in London. This shoot has taught me that location does matter as I wasn't completely happy with this video because of the locations and the limited things to do within this location, if I had went to London I could have shot clips of the different locations, which suggests how love travels. I also could of videoed more random people which would have broke up the video a bit more. What I tried to achieve with this shoot was to show the simplicity of love and show that it is the little actions that matter, I think what I achieved to show in this shoot was to show just the little actions of love, not that love is simple and the little actions make everything. I think what helped show the little actions of love was the music that accompanied the video. What I learnt from this shoot is that you can't just go to any old place, the location is very important for the video as I think my video would have turned out a lot better, or at least would have looked better if I had a better location.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of other possible shoots which I could pursue in the future, for example, as I have done 2 videos concerning love and how it is considered beautiful, In the future I could not complete a still photographic shoot of 2 people who are shown to be in love, i would complete this on location.

Golddigger Work Diary

In this lesson I decided to do a shoot on the topic of money as it gives us the power to buy beautiful things or things that makes us beautiful. When I decided to use a model however I got a completely different idea. I would make her look like a gold digger who are always stereotyped to be beautiful. I really enjoyed this shoot and I would like to re do it in a better format, for example, my model wearing clothes which make her come across as more of a gold digger e.g. more expensive/special clothing. I would also withdraw more money from my bank so that there would be more money, to emphasise the idea of a gold digger. This shoot made me learn composition of camera to highlight something, especially on a model. It also made me learn how to position a model in order to highlight a prop which is important for the shoot.


In this image I created gif which shows the image going black and white to colour every 0.1 seconds, however i used selective colour on the black and white layer to make it stand out and show a consistent. In this image I tried to achieve the meaning that people fade however money always stays. I personally think that the speed may be too quick for this gif and it comes across as flashing lights too much. In this picture I think I achieved good editing skills due t the fact I used both selective colour and animation, I also think it works quite well together as it displays a constant other than the model is in the same position. I think what I could of done next, or to improve this photo I could of had flipped the image in the animation and still continued to use the selective colour to represent the money being the constant colour as the only constant in the image as it would have enforced the meaning that I tried to achieve, that money is forever and people fade.

In this image i took one picture and flipped it so it had two of the same image. I was trying to acheive the idea of having two identities due to the model representing a gold diggers, therefore she has who she is (money grabbing), and who she acts like to her boyfriend/ husband. I think if I was to do this again I would make the second image which has been flipped a different side of her to show what she is like in her second identity. What I don't like about this image is the shadows meet in the middle and I think it makes it look really edited, which it is, however i very much dislike it. However the shadow meeting int he middle has taught me to take more care of the lighting when in the studio to ensure that I don't get any shadows.

I don't think I achieved my project title for this shoot as i don't think it was glamorous enough to enforce the message that I wanted, which is that she is a gold digger because I think she looks to casual. I also think the background should have been darker to enforce the message I wanted and to suggest that she has a dark personality. I think the idea of which I had achieves my project title however I don't think the way I presented this seems in relation to my project title.

By doing this shoot it gave me ideas for future shoots, for example, i thought in a future shoot that perhaps I could do this again however with more money, like I have already mentioned. However it has also made me think of another shoot which is of materialistic things which many people think you need to make you beautiful.

Exterior Work Diary

In this lesson I decided to broaden my project and make beauty link to the beauty of world as well as in people so I went out to shoot and shot pictures of plants/nature close up to highlight their details. What I tried to achieve in this shoot is to broaden my project as i felt very limited with what i could do with my project, therefore with the beauty of the world i stumbled on the nature which surrounds us. What i tried to achieve with this shoot was to focus on close ups to display the details of the plants/leaves to show their beauty from an angle which isn't seen by others usually as nature is often just passed by. I am not very happy with this shoot as I went out to shoot in the college and there wasn't a lot of plants, I feel as if there wasn't enough nature beauty to shoot which made me feel as if I didn't achieve the full potential standard of the shoot, therefore I have decided that I will go out to a secret garden kind of area in London where it will be filled with plants and trees. This shoot was almost like a trial run, and I am glad I did it because even though there wasn't a lot to shoot, the images I did shoot I am very happy with. However the use of this trial has taught me to be able to achieve the beauty project title for a nature setting that I need to choose the correct nature setting, filled with nature otherwise I am hit with the difficulty of not having a lot to shoot and therefore limited photos which I can use.

In this image I found a dark red leaf, I picked it up and placed it on the wall, shooting it downwards. This produced a limited depth of field which can be seen as the leaf is very sharp whereas the background is out of focus. I tried to achieve the out of focus element as I thought it would highlight the details of the leaf, which shows what others cannot see. This shows the different hints of colours in the leaves and I think this is very beautiful which achieves my aim to create batty photography. When it came to editing i turned the levels up producing a brighter red for the leaf, I preferred it like this as it makes the image more eye catching. This is my favourite picture from the shoot. This image has taught me that when I plan to do my next shoot in a secret garden, I would use a green background as it would enforce nature beauty as opposed to the brick wall which is in the background which sort of ruins the natural beauty element, and slightly fails me achieving the complete beauty idea.

In this image I took a picture of the flower in close up and it came out quite sharp where as the rest was out of focus. I liked the image in its natural form however I felt it was quite boring and needed something else needed to it. As I felt like this I decided to edit the picture using selective colour, I turned the image black and white and used the rubber tool and carefully rubbed out the black and white of the flower. I like this effect on this image as the flower itself is cream and it doesn't crash against the black and white too harshly. What I tried to achieve with this picture was to make the flower stand out against the plants which I think I achieved through selective colour.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots which I can complete in the future, I could do a shoot of more exciting flowers, or a serene environment in general so I could take a picture of a complete landscape. By going to a place such as a secret garden I could photograph a range of different flowers in one area which could suggest how there is more then one version of beauty.

Cosmetical Work Diary

In this lesson I did a shoot of makeup cosmetics as it is heavily associated with makeup photography, because without it there would be no field of makeup photography. I used a boom light over the top of a white backdrop as it illuminated the backdrop nicely. I didn't bring in all my makeup, I just brought in the cosmetics which are used daily and which are nice coloured. I really liked this shoot and i think I came out with some really good straight images. This shoot also allowed me to again use techniques which I have studied with the class, for example, multiple imagery and animation. I found animation was the most time consuming however the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing to look at. I found that some of the images, like one of my ones using blusher and a brush, was very soft and looked subtle, which demonstrates the texture of the brush and the feeling the powder leaves on your face. Editing took me a long time with this shoot however I felt it was worth it. In this shoot I tried to achieve to show the products of beauty and what people think we need to be beautiful, and showing beauty in more of a literal way. I think I achieved this as I took multiple pictures of the make up separately and together and I think it worked really well.

In this image I used my eyeshadow palette as the subject of the picture, In this image the initial image has been cropped as it was too big and the animation of the changing colours were very small which I didn't like. I like how I have made the animation of the changing colours on different shades of pink as opposed to choosing random different shades, I think the animation shows progression of colour which I really like. it seems to get brighter and brighter as the animation continues. I drained all the colour from the rest of the image to make the animation of colour stand out more, which makes it the focal point of the picture. If I was to not drain the colour the animation wouldn't even be noticeable. If I was to do this shoot again, or simply edit this again I think I would make the colours flash up scattered as the audience wouldn't know where the next one was coming from, which would draw more attention to the image. What doing this image has taught me is to not be so organised it beauty isn't always organised, e.g. being natural.

In this image I have put 9 pictures of various cosmetics into one image, making the technique of multiple imagery. When using a white background it is very difficult when doing levels and curves to make the backgrounds all the same colour for the grid, and in this picture it is evident that they are not all the same colour background however despite this fact I still really like this image. I like how the middle picture has no background in it and it works as a very nice centre piece. This didn't take me very long to do because I have done this a lot now so I feel it is very easy now. If I was to edit this image again I would put the images in a different order because I am not happy with the way I have two pallets next to each other as I don't think it has the scattered vibe that I wanted it to have. Looking at this photo it has taught me that I have to be more careful with the editing as I am not happy with the different shades of background as it doesn't produce a constant and to me its suggest imperfection which I suppose could be related to my project title however due to the fact that this shoot was on make up, I don't think any imperfection within the picture suggests the message for my shoot. 

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots I can do in the future, for example, I could do a shoot of more make up to explain how make up is used in mass by the youth of todays girls to achieve an image of beauty. I could also use a model in this shoot as I could show a young girl to be holding two big handfuls of make up, I could also make her look vulnerable to show how she is almost a victim to the suggested image of beauty. 

Video Work Diary

In this lesson we had to make a video of anything just to demonstrate that we could do it, the only criteria being that it should be arty. I really like creating this video I thought it was really fun, I used a friend and made it sort of a montage for a song. I enjoyed the editing as the most part because I like watching it all come together. I think video and photography is very similar in the sense that you shoot and then edit, however it is also similar in the sense that they create stories, which i like. The video shows the story in more of a normal way, conventional way and it comes across more obvious to the audience. I would definitely use video in my personal project.



In this video the filming was not scripted, it was a spur of the moment kind of thing. I like this as it comes across more natural as opposed to if I had staged the whole thing. I like the style of this video as it is like a bunch of home videos put together that work well together and show happiness. The use of the song in the background worked really well in the video as it fit with the mood of the video, I based my idea for the video around the song. Editing was very easy with the use of premiere pro, I could easily cut bits of clips out, I could put in effects which made the video flow from shot to shot a lot better, I could attach the music which assists the video, etc. I found premiere pro very easy to use, even though I have used it before and I know what I'm doing, I think its very good.

Masked Work Diary

In this shoot I bought a plain mask with paint and designed it as I wished, I started off just doing flowers and vines, connoting to natural, however in the end I begun yo splash it with colour. I had a deep meaning behind this shoot which is how people use make up for a mask, however this is a literal approach. I found that the mask made my model not look anything like herself which I rely liked as it explained the effect make up can have. What I tried to achieve in this shoot was to send a message that people use make up as a mask to cover who they really are, and as a boost for self esteem. I don't think everyone will understand this however I think some will. What I learnt with this shoot is that I have to take more time planning, for example I wasn't too happy with the shots which I done in this shoot, I found that I ran out of ideas of what to shoot very quickly, therefore I needed to think about it more before going into the studio and wasting mine and my models time. What I would do next after this shoot is learn from my mistakes and to plan ahead of time.

In this image the narrative is almost that the model has given up with having a mask, however it is almost like a white flag from the composition of the photo as she hangs onto it loosely by her legs. I like how the white mask contrasts against the black of her bottoms as it makes it stand out and even though it isn't particularly in the rule of thirds , it is still the focal point of the picture. What I tried to achieve with this image is perceive the message that beauty isn't everything and it is okay to drop your mask, I think I achieved this as I showed this in quite a literal attempt.

In this image I edited this picture so it had selective colour, I kept the majority of the picture black and white and the put the mask in colour, this suggest that this is what brings her to life and I like this narrative. Also it almost acts as if we colour our face with make up which I like. I like the intention of selective colour in this image however I am quite unhappy with the result as the white mask seems to be off white because I have drained every other colour from this image. What I have learnt from this image is to discard anything I am to happy with because it will just annoy me.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots which I could complete in the future, for example I could do a shoot of a clear face mask being peeled off (with close ups of the mask slightly peeling off of the face) as this would suggest more of a growing into your own skin kind of shoot as opposed to a physical mask.

Multiple Exposure Work Diary

I found multiple exposure a very nice technique and very easy once you have the settings of your camera all set up. i like that you can use as many images as wished however I prefer it with just two as with more than 2 and an incorrect composition of subject I feel it can become too much. I prefer doing multiple exposure with a model and a subject as I think it blends better as opposed to 2 subjects or 2 models. 

In this image I have took a picture of Amber and then of a flower bush and I personally think it contrasts over her face very nicely. The bushes prickles are very faint on her face however almost seem to create a pattern on them which is very intriguing to look at. I also like the cluster of pink which is a flower which covers her hair as it adds more colour to the photo. I didn't edit this photo very much as I liked the idea of keeping it natural. 

In this image I decided to experiment with using 3 images in one image and i think it worked quite nicely purely because of the idea. I simply took 3 pictures of Amber looking in different directions and they all overlapped each other making a nice effect. In this photo I edited it so it was black and white and I feel like this brought a deep feel to the image as to me as an photo it suggest three different personalties in one person or perhaps not knowing which direction to go in, therefore indecisiveness. 

Slow Sync Work Diary

In this shoot we studied the technique of slow sync which involved us using a studio light, a red head and a blocker to block the light falling on the background and any flare that could hit the camera lens. With this technique blurring is produced alongside a still image and it creates quite a cool effect. i really enjoyed this technique and it seems a lot easier when you are doing it as opposed to it being explained, i think it would make a really nice effect in perhaps a dance shoot, therefore I will do a shoot of the black swan and use this technique within it.

This is my favourite picture form the shoot as it shows Amelia spinning however her arm is very constant and it almost looks as if she is dragging her blur behind her with the positioning of her hand. I also didn't over edit these pictures as I like the distorted colour. I feel like the blur kind of looks like a flame and I think this looks really cool as she pulls it across.

I like this image as it almost looks like two faces with the blur and with the sharp image of her. I put this picture in this work diary because I thought it was a good example of slow sync as Amelia looks very sharp in one instant and very blurred in another. I like how black the back drop looks as it makes the flame orange blur stand out against it. I also like the composition of this image and that she is not central, i just think it is a nice effect and change.

Comme Une Etoile Work Diary

In this lesson I decided to do a shoot incorporating glitter as it is often used in fashion/beauty photography as a form of cosmetic. It was very simple to do , i just put glue stick on my face and then put the chosen colour of glitter on certain parts. I chose the colours of gold, silver and blue, i like this choice of colour as I think it goes well together, the blue separates the gold and silver, avoiding them from clashing. I did this as a self portrait shoot as I didn't want the glitter and glue to irritate a models face so to prevent the hassle, i just did it to myself.

In this image it shows mainly my face and shows me looking away from the camera, even though my eyes look a little bit weird, I still really like this image as it shows the glitter very well and you can almost imagine the feel of it as a texture in this image. This image also follows the rule of thirds as my face is in the centre, making the glitter the focal point of the image.

In this image I decided to make a grid of 1x3 showing me facing 3 different directions, showing the glitter from all 3 angles. I like how these pictures haven't been over edited and come across as quite natural despite the glitter covering my face. I would have preferred if the image on the right was similar to the one n the left, however I did experiment just flipping the image and it was too similar so I decided against it and found the difference worked quite well. I like how each image has constant of the picture just being of my face and the zoom doesn't changed as I don't think I would find this aesthetically pleasing.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots I could complete in the future, for example I could do a shoot with more materials than just glitter, for example, a shoot with paint, or a shoot with fabric covering the face. I like the idea of doing shoots which involve texture, as I like the look of the texture of the glitter in this shoot, despite it looking aesthetically pleasing, it seems to look quite rough which is quite contrasting.

Pure Work Diary

In this shoot I decided to go against my project brief to create a contrast, in this shoot I took pictures with absolutely no make up on and with natural hair. This defies media make up/ beauty photography which I quite like as there is still an element of glamour with the editing. I used a black backdrop which I like as it came out greyish with the lighting and contrasted softly against my hair and simple clothing. In this shoot I took quite simple pictures, nothing too posy, to get the message of my shoot across. 'Pure'. 

In this image the main focus is my hair as I am backwards. I like the use of black and whet in this picture as the blonde and brown in my hair separate from each other quite distinctively. I also like how soft the black and white makes my skin look as it suggest that as a model i choose the pure pathway regularly. I like the composition of this photo as my hair becomes the focal point of the photo.

This is my favourite picture from this shoot as it comes across quite innocent which is another word for pure, or is at least related to it. In this picture I am covering up my face but a smile is evident due to the quint of my eyes which creates a personality in a picture, I come across quite bashful. I took some saturation out this picture which made my hair come out quite light, turned the back drop greyish and made my tan come out, this all worked quite well together. I like how I am on the edge of this photo as to me it represents an idea of trying to hide, which is enforced with the arm in front of my face.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of shoots which I could pursue in the future, for example I could do a shoot of various different girls with no make up on to continue the theme of being pure. i could also do a contrasting shoot showing a girl with a full face of make up on and another girl with absolutely none on to show how different make up can make you, or perhaps even use the same girl to show just how different it can make a person look.

Multiple Flash Work Diary

In this shoot we shot the technique of multiple flash which involved us holding the flash button which is direct to the studio light and takings pictures with the subject keep moving, to produce more than one image in one photo, much like multiple exposure. In enjoyed this and I think it is a very good technique for the studio however if you want the subject to stay in one place and only move one part of it, it becomes very difficult as the subject (or the model) can't help but move a little bit, which will become evident within the photograph.

In this image I got Addy to stand in 3 different positions pulling 3 different faces, suggesting 3 different people, even though it is evident she is that same person. In this picture I turned the saturation down due to the last image fading slightly, even though I would prefer if it was not there, each image gets fainter and fainter as it moves to the right, suggesting a ghostly effect, which is kind of intriguing.





In the image below I got Addy to stand in the same place however to close her hands and move them down slightly each time I said 'go' (indicating that I was going to take a picture). I like the idea of this and the hand part as to me it signifies the hindu god of vishnu and I think it is amazing that you can produce something like this digitally. However, as mentioned at the beginning of this work diary, it is very hard to keep a subject in one place and move the other parts, her head seems like I have duplicated the layer and kept dragging it down slightly in workshop, which is not the case. Despite that small factor, I really like this photograph.

Blurring Work Diary

In this lesson I shot the technique of blurring. I found blurring very easy, and I found it the exact same as the formal element of movement which I shot last year in my first year of A level photography. I decided to shoot inside as it was very cold outside however I think this worked well as the lighting was dim and brought a dark eerie vibe to my photos. I think I would use blurring within my personal shoots however I wouldn't make it heavy blurring as I would want my subject to be recognisable.

In this photo I blurred my friend called Nathan and it came out really well. However I wanted it more blurry to make it seem ghostly, therefore when I edited the picture I duplicated the layer and dragged it across to give it this ghostly vibe, I think this idea worked well and made the picture come out better. In this picture I like how the colours are quite differing and blur into one another rather than being a whole and hitting each other.

In this picture I quickly took a blurred picture when a random person was walking down the corridor as I thought it would look cool, and I think it does. I like this picture because its almost as if the blurred corridor traps the person in, making it seem as if he alone and something bad is going to happen, or he is something dangerous as he as a subject is completely black. I also like how this picture is on a wonk and the composition is not completely straight as I thinks this adds to the effect I have already listed.

Cinco De Mayo Work Diary

In this lesson it was my first personal shoot lesson and I really enjoyed it. As I am doing media make up , and in this particular shoot I used face paint, prior to this shoot it was imperative that I practiced the face paint that I was going to do. By doing this it meant that I could do the face paint with much more ease and quicker than if it was the first time I had done it. Last year I made the mistake of doing a shoot with face paint and I didn't practice beforehand, In the end I did the face paint on the model 3 times where I kept messing it up. Therefore, I made sure to practice this time. I decided to do this shoot in the studio with a bright backdrop as cinch de mayo is a festival in mexico and I was repeating the day of the dead holiday make up. I copied another persons version of face paint which I found on the internet, however I left out some parts as I didn't want to over crowd my models face.

This is my favourite edit from this shoot as I think it looks quite dark and fits in with the theme of cinco de mayo. I edited dark eyeliner around her eyes which turned out successful as it brought out the whites of her eyes, it also fits in with the colour scheme of her face. I also like the composition of this photograph as it allows you to see the backdrop and brings a light of positivity to the image. If I could change something about this photograph it would be a physical matter, I would've made her lips darker, or at least have gone over it as her pink lips are peaking through. Although, in a way I like this because it emphasises the fact that it is merely face paint and this follows closely to the holiday. 

I can't quite make up my mind about the edit of this photograph. I like that it it is wavy as to me it represents 2 souls which could be the models and the soul from the mexican army which fell on the 5th of may, coming out through spirit. I changed the hue to make this picture stand out from the others in this collection and I like this as her eyes still stand out amongst the rest and her eyes blend in with the background even though they are separated. However I am not sure if I like the composition as I feel like there is too much background in the picture, even though the model still remains as the focal element. I think if I was to re shoot the exact image I would move her face in the slightest bit more so her jaw is showing a little bit.

By doing this shoot it has made me think of possible shoots which I could complete in the future, for example I could experiment with face paint a bit more and create more characters through the use of face paint, for example, i could create a skeleton or perhaps well known characters such as the joker or two face. 

Location Portraiture Work Diary

In this lesson  we studied location portraiture, I actually found it very easy to do with my camera. The technique is very simple however little things like positioning of the subject make this technique hard. With incorrect positioning you can lose the depth of field, which you need to maintain. I went out to shoot and when coming back i had to shoot again, make a list of things I could improve on concerning location portraiture and then I had to go out, shoot again and work on those certain things. I felt like this was helpful as it gave me a proper understanding of location portraiture and all the elements needed.

I like this image because I like that the buildings are quite out of focus and amelia seems quite sharp. Also I like her as a model in this field as her eyes seem to be brought out in this image. Also I like how her hair contrasts against the dull background as it is a bright blond. I didn't over edit this image as I thought it was nice enough to leave unedited, I also think it makes it seem more natural as it already has had the location portraiture technique.

I like this image as I like how I have edited, I have satiated the picture and I think this goes nicely with the location portraiture technique. I also think it makes the image look a lot softer. I like the composition of this picture because I like how Amelia looks biggest in the picture making her the focal point of the image, this is a good use of depth of field. In this picture I would of preferred if this wasn't the background and it was more a city scenery to display contemplation, however as a test run this works nicely.

Multiple Imagery Work Diary

In this lesson we shot 2 multiple imagery sequences in the studio and 3 outside. When inside the studio I wanted to explore how multiple imagery looked with a person as the subject so that when it comes to beginning my unit 3 project according to my brief, I would know if I could use it. When outside I shot things related to nature as I liked the idea of shooting them from different zooms and angles to show how different things might see them, for example, a close up of the detail of flower to show how it might appear to a creature such a bee. Overall, once finishing the editing of both my studio and location photos, I found that I really liked the finish product of multiple imagery and that I actually enjoyed the creation of multiple imagery.


In this photo I took pictures of Tina's eyes and nose facing in various different directions, I put these images in an almost chronological order, it seems as if they are following each other. Out of both my location and studio multiple imagery photographs, this is by far my favorite and I put the most effort in this one, turning each picture black and white, then altering each black and white setting also.




In this image I took a picture of a flower bush from various angles, I like this picture because of the ever changing focus on each different image. I decided not to over edit these pictures as the flower bush itself was very beautiful, therefore I just did levels and curves. I put these pictures in a random order as I thought it looked nicer than as opposed to if I put the close ups all in one line and the further away ones in another, and the furthest in another.
